The Müstair Anastasis

9th century
Fresco
Convent Church of St. John the Baptist, Müstair, Switzerland

Because of the unfortunate condition of the fresco it is questionable whether one should call this an Anastasis or a Harrowing of Hell. I can't make out a broken gate or chasm, certain markers of an Anastasis; but neither can I see the hell mouth that is so frequent in Harrowing images.

Christ on the left takes Adam by the arm to lift him from the underworld. Eve is at Adam's side. In Anastasis images, the haloed figures behind the first couple are usually Old Testament notables.
